Woodpeckers and Wildflowers

Among the most interesting stories of the week for me are the sightings of thought-to-be-extinct birds and wildflowers.

Lord God
Mount Diablo Buckwheat

Then there’s all the chatter about the Amorphophallus titanium. It’s called the “corpse” flower because it smells horrible when it blooms.

Um, do you mean the chatter from 2003 or 2001?

No, the chatter around my dinner table this weekend when my mother-in-law tells me that my sister-in-law spotted, or well actually smelled is more accurate, it's cousin in her backyard (in California) and the local news covered the story!

Take a look. You’d swear that these kinds of plants were science fiction. But in reality these plants are used for decoration and medicinal purposes among the Sumatrans.

Almost makes you miss science class, doesn’t it? What a wonderful variety of life we have on planet earth!
